Varsity softball gets a taste of post-season

The varsity softball team hopes to continue its road to the playoffs once again.

After a short performance last year against Chapparral, coach Alberto Castro has managed to get a 9-7 record.

“We’ve battled through the entire season,” said Castro, “and had our share of ups and downs. Right now, we’re in the bubble in respect to State.”

Junior Annette Saldana says overall team chemistry has helped shape the outcome of games.

“It’s been awesome, but it could be bettter,” said Saldana. “I think we lost to teams we shouldn’t have. But everybody gets along, and that works for us. We just have to push a little harder.”

Two of the team’s losses were against Alhambra, at 1-3 both home and away, which has created a sense of momentum amongst players. The situation had not been new to returning players.

So far, the team has clinched a win against Maryvale, one of the lower-ranked teams in the region.

“Last year, the girls got a taste of the post-season and they like it,” said Castro. “It’s their motivation right now. I impress it on them on a daily basis, but they know how important the wins are.

I don’t let the records show. There are some play makers that come through…I feel confident, but it’s all in the hands of the rankings,” said Castro.
